Took my first trip to the Masters this year. Went down there with a friend for the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday practice rounds. A truly unbelievable experience. My viewing experience while watching it on TV this past weekend was enhanced 100 fold by now having seen the length and elevation changes at Augusta National.
Better yet, I did not meet one person on the grounds that was not pleasant. I mean EVERYBODY was nice!
Now…my takeaways after watching the final day.
Congrats to Charl Schwartzel…13 strokes in the last 4 holes….4 birdies…really?
To all who thinks Tiger is an ass in post round interviews…. It would help a lot if the reporters would stop asking stupid questions like, “are you satisfied with the way you played?”. The guy wants to WIN so anything less than that is not up to his standard so quit asking. He’s 35 now and has not changed that approach since he came on tour. He shot 10 under soooooooo, quit asking if he is back…he never left. Gee, I don’t know?? If I shot 10 under and knew I could have easily got to 14 under but didn’t due to 3 holes on the back 9, I guess I would not be satisfied. Best part is if he had made a few putts on the back nine between 11 and 13, he would have shot 16 under cause the “mojo” would be working.
The post round interviews when guys come off the course are as annoying as the halftime interview of a basketball coach who is down 20… Odds are his team either needs to 1) play better defense, or 2) hit more shots? How hard is it. Paralysis by analysis.
Rory, I shot 79 in a local tournament recently and played badly as well. Could have been an ugly 76 and I would have made the cut. The difference is, as bad as I felt because I know that is not my standard, you had to have a tough day in front of the world and handled it with class beyond your years….heck, I and about 80 million other people would have understood if you wrapped your club around a tree, or blew out an expletive, but I for one am a big fan and will look forward to your Major victories in the near future. Golf is in good hands.
Dumbest question I saw: Do you think fans are disappointed that a player nobody knows about won? Schwartzel is the 29th best player in the world for God’s sake! Now he is #11. Why be surprised?
Finally, anyone that thinks that the Nicklaus era was tougher can suck it! OK, I’m 50 and a huge Nicklaus fan. Screw the equipment argument because everybody has the same equipment when competing in the same era. Would Jack vs Tiger with the same equipment be a great match? Duh! Of course it would.
I’m telling you this. The standard is 18 majors, but 14 majors against the depth of the field Tiger Woods has dominated over the years does not make 14 mathematically better than Jack, but I would argue it is a better number and was more difficult to attain.
There were a few guys that could go low back in the day. They are coming out of high school now! The Master’s leaderboard on Sunday shows how deep the field truly is out there…
Remember, once upon a time there was this myth about age being important to win a Major. Does anyone remember Francis Quimet?
